Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has moved to ease weeks of diplomatic strain with China concerning Taiwan. The effort follows heightened regional tensions over the potential for conflict in the Taiwan Strait. On Wednesday, Takaichi addressed Japan’s parliament in response to a lawmaker’s question. She stated that Tokyo’s official position on Taiwan remains unchanged. The Prime Minister specifically referred to a key 1972 agreement with Beijing. That commitment, which normalized diplomatic relations between Japan and China, forms the foundation of Japan’s current policy. Takaichi’s comments signal a deliberate attempt to lower tensions.
