Chinese AI Models Power Nearly a Third of Global Open-Source Use

Chinese-developed artificial intelligence (AI) systems now drive nearly 30% of all global activity using open-source models, a new report reveals. Chinese-language user prompts also rank second worldwide in volume, trailing only English. This surge in 2024 is largely fueled by major Chinese open-source large language models (LLMs). These are AI systems trained on vast data sets that are publicly available for use and modification. Leading contributors include the Qwen family from Alibaba Group, DeepSeek-V3, and Moonshot AI's Kimi K2. The data highlights China's significant and growing role in the global open-source AI ecosystem. It indicates widespread international adoption of these tools for a variety of applications.
