A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Venezuela on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The tremor triggered panic in the capital, Caracas, according to AFP journalists at the scene.
Several strong aftershocks followed the initial quake. The shaking was also felt in neighboring Colombia.
Rescuers are currently searching for victims in collapsed buildings. Officials have warned of potentially heavy casualties as emergency crews assess the damage across affected areas.
