However, experts and officials in places like Jakarta and Nairobi are looking beyond test scores. For them, the key question is whether such advanced reasoning can tackle local challenges.
The primary interest is in applied uses. This includes optimizing fertilizer distribution for farmers, streamlining complex supply chains, or customizing educational tools. These applications are often more urgent than achieving top scores on academic benchmarks.
This shift in focus highlights a growing divide in global AI priorities. While some regions concentrate on raw performance, the Global South is actively seeking technology that delivers direct, tangible benefits. The adoption of accessible, open-source models is accelerating as they offer a path to these solutions.
