Funeral ceremonies for Iran’s late supreme leader Ali Khamenei began on Saturday, state television reported. The events drew thousands and are intended as a show of strength to the Islamic republic’s opponents.
Iranian authorities expect between 15 and 20 million participants in Tehran alone over the next three days. The tributes honor the man who led the country for 35 years.
Six days of funeral ceremonies are planned to commemorate Khamenei.
