A German striker accidentally decided a fierce local derby with an embarrassing own goal.
Nick Woltemade of Newcastle United headed the ball into his own net early in the second half against rivals Sunderland. The mistake was the only goal in a match full of aggressive play but few clear chances.
The 23-year-old had been largely ineffective in attack before the decisive error. After scoring against his own team, he was substituted soon after.
Sunderland fans gave Woltemade a loud, sarcastic cheer as he left the pitch. Once a favorite with Newcastle supporters, his mistake has now made him an unforgettable figure for their rivals.
