More than $1 million has been raised for a man hailed as a hero for disarming a gunman during a violent attack in Sydney.
Ahmed al Ahmed, a Syrian-Australian father, tackled an attacker at a Jewish community gathering at Bondi Beach last weekend. He wrestled a shotgun away from the man, who was one of several attackers.
Al Ahmed was seriously injured during the struggle. He is now recovering in a hospital, where doctors say his condition is improving.
A public fundraising campaign for his medical costs and his family was launched online. It reached its initial goal of $20,000 in minutes. Donations have now passed $1 million.
The attack is part of an ongoing investigation by Australian police. Authorities have not released further details about the suspects or a motive.
