Armed kidnappers abducted 28 travelers in central Nigeria on Saturday night. The victims were heading to a community in Plateau State to watch a televised National Football League (NFL) game.
The attack occurred around 8 p.m. local time. A spokesperson said the group was traveling to Sabon Layi for a viewing event when gunmen stopped their vehicles.
Kidnapping for ransom is a widespread criminal enterprise in several Nigerian regions. Large groups traveling on rural roads, especially at night, are frequent targets.
Local security forces have begun a search-and-rescue operation. Authorities have not identified the victims or named any suspects.
