EY's Top Shell Auditor Departs Amid Independence Probe

The lead audit partner for energy giant Shell has left Ernst & Young (EY). The departure follows a regulatory investigation into whether the partner worked on the account for too long. Under strict audit rules, lead partners must rotate off a major client after a set period to ensure fresh oversight. In July, Shell disclosed that its EY lead partner had exceeded that time limit. The UK's Financial Reporting Council (FRC) is now examining potential breaches of independence rules at EY related to the Shell audit. The regulator has not yet concluded its investigation. EY stated it does not comment on personnel matters. Shell confirmed the partner's departure and said it continues to work with EY, which remains its auditor.
