A senior Saudi Arabian official has publicly accused the United Arab Emirates of helping a wanted Yemeni separatist leader to escape.
The official stated that the UAE assisted Aidarous al-Zubaidi. Al-Zubaidi is a leading figure in the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a group seeking an independent southern Yemen.
He is wanted in Yemen on charges of treason. This follows a military offensive he led earlier this year. That offensive intensified a long-running dispute between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, who are nominal allies in Yemen's conflict.
The public accusation marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two powerful Gulf nations.
