Children's Rights Take Center Stage Across Turkey
A series of initiatives across Turkey is placing the legal rights and welfare of children firmly in the spotlight. From legal education in schools to new advocacy centers, efforts are intensifying to empower young people and integrate their voices into societal structures.
In Istanbul, volunteer lawyers are taking this mission directly to students. The Istanbul Bar Association's Children's Rights Center educated 1,344 children about their legal protections in just one month as part of its "Children's Rights at School Project" [39765]. This educational push is being matched by new institutional support. In Adana, a dedicated Children's Rights Center has opened at the local bar association through a joint project by the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) [23371]. The center will provide free legal support and act as a direct channel for children's voices within the legal system, handling cases of rights violations.
The focus extends beyond the courtroom. In Foça, a women's group used a New Year's celebration to unite around a call to action, emphasizing that "a child's right to a humane life must be secured" for a fair and peaceful future [36847]. Similarly, the Human Rights Association (IHD) is preparing to host a conference titled "Children in the Peace Process," which will examine how conflict violates children's rights and how to protect their welfare during transitions to peace [22976].
However, advocates warn that significant challenges remain. A leading labor rights expert has described a troubling trend of "mass child labor" in Turkey, arguing that certain vocational training programs are part of a broader policy to channel children into the workforce [37764]. This stark warning underscores the critical need for the ongoing rights education and legal protection services being promoted elsewhere.
